Using high-interest reading passages, students will practice mastering 16+ important reading and writing skills. You won’t have to keep repeating yourself, freeing up your time, energy, and focus. As a result, your students will become confident readers and writers!

You can use the spiral review as bellringers, early finisher work, homework, or sub plans. Students will be reintroduced to a variety of important ELA skills and academic language on a rotating basis every day, with the material gradually becoming more challenging.

You can print this resource using the “paper saving” pdf version, or you can assign the full page digital version. Both come with a handy literary term glossary for the kids to use for reference.

How does it work?

Mondays begin with a short, high-interest reading passage. On Tuesday -Thursday, students will work on reading skills and strategies related to the passage. Then on Friday, students will complete a short writing piece based on the passage.

Alternatively, you can easily assign one reading comprehension passage as a “mini-unit.” Just give students all of the reading and writing activities together at the same time. It will take 35-45 minutes that way.

How long will each activity take?

If it is completed daily, each activity will take about 5-8 minutes. If you would like to review the answers as a class, you’ll need a few more minutes for that.

If you decide to assign each mini-unit at once, all five activities will take about 35-45 minutes.

Enjoy!
