Summarizing: GIST and Beyond has everything you need to teach and reinforce summarizing.

I had a hard time finding summarizing lessons that include interesting fiction and nonfiction texts, answer keys, and many opportunities to practice. So I created this unit on writing a summary!

This resource is easy to use and will help you teach students three summary styles. Students will learn what information to look for, depending on the type of text they are summarizing. There are three fun and memorable graphic organizer styles that make it easy for kids to remember what information to include.

This resource includes the following:
~ guided practice on summary writing
~ graphic organizers in three different styles
~ six original expository texts: Shark WeekA Dolphin Named Winter, and more
~ two fictional narratives
~ complete answer keys

What are other teachers saying about this?

“Variety of ways to summarize text and help students get to the point of the story instead of simply retelling.”

“We had so much fun with this unit and now, several months later, when required to summarize, the students discuss which method of summarizing they should use. What a terrific idea and the lessons are wonderful!”
