Using context clues to define unfamiliar words is essential to comprehension; however, most kids struggle with it. This scaffolded, interactive unit will go a long way toward helping students define unfamiliar words and phrases. Most students have only learned how to define words using other text. This unit teaches them how to use visuals, word parts, parts of speech, AND surrounding text to define words.

You can use the PowerPoint show, the anchor chart, and/or the poster to teach four key skills necessary to defining unfamiliar words, while students add to the guided notes. Two styles of notes are included; your students can use the folding interactive or traditional notes.

Students will then work on practice worksheets specifically designed to address each individual skill. Focusing on each strategy allows kids the time to achieve mastery. A ten item quiz/test is included, as well as a long-term reading record sheet.
