Description
Do you feel like you’re spending way too much time on ELA test prep, reviewing reading and writing skills you already taught? Here’s a great low-prep solution for your middle school English classes!
In just 5-10 minutes a day, students can practice one reading comprehension and writing skill. This daily spiral review bellringer reintroduces important ELA skills, in addition to academic language that your students should know.
This is Passage 6 from Spiral Review Reading and Writing Set 2.
On the first day, students will read the high-interest reading passage. They’ll determine the central idea and they’ll include 2 supporting details. On each subsequent day, students will use the same passage to address a different skill.
What is the passage about?
This is a fun piece written from the point of view of a smart dog who is giving advice to other dogs about how to keep their hoomans in shape. Kids will love reading the canine’s unique perspective.

How does it work?
Mondays begin with a short, high-interest reading passage. On Tuesday -Thursday, students will work on reading skills and strategies related to the passage. Then on Friday, students will complete a short writing piece based on the passage.
Alternatively, you can easily assign one reading comprehension passage as a mini-unit. Just give students all of the reading and writing activities together at the same time. It will take 35-45 minutes that way.
How long will each activity take?
If it is completed daily, each activity will take about 5-8 minutes. If you would like to review the answers as a class, you’ll need a few more minutes for that.
If you assign each mini-unit at once, all five activities will take about 35-45 minutes.
