What is this passage about?

President Theodore Roosevelt once said that out of all the books written by him and about him, the book made up of letters he wrote to his children was the one that made him the proudest. In Letters to His Children: Kermit

and Ted, students will read excerpts from historic letters written by President Theodore Roosevelt to his sons. They will learn the importance of historic letters, while learning about Teddy Roosevelt both indirectly and directly.

What is included?

  • A paper saving pdf version of the story and all of the skill work (Monday is a full page, Tues.-Friday are two per page.)
  • Full-page interactive digital version
  • Answers in both the pdf and digital format for quick review

How does it work?

The schedule below can be used if you are using this daily.

  • Monday begins with a short, high-interest reading passage.
  • Tuesday-Thursday will require students to work on reading skills and strategies related to the passage.
  • On Friday, students will write a short summary based on the passage.

Alternatively, you can easily assign one reading comprehension passage as a mini-unit. Just give students all of the reading and writing activities together at the same time. It will take 35-45 minutes that way.

How long will each activity take?

If it is completed daily, each activity will take about 5-10 minutes. If you would like to review the answers as a class, you’ll need a few more minutes for that.

If you assign each mini-unit at once, all five activities will take about 35-45 minutes.
