Description

Do you feel like you’re spending way too much time on ELA test prep, reviewing reading and writing skills you already taught? Here’s a great low-prep solution for your middle school English classes!

In just 5-10 minutes a day, students can practice one reading comprehension and writing skill. This daily spiral review bellringer reintroduces important ELA skills and academic language.

This is Passage 9 from Spiral Review Reading and Writing Set 2.

Which skills are covered?

  • Monday: Central Idea
  • Tuesday: Evaluating Evidence
  • Wednesday: Author’s Purpose and Point of View
  • Thursday: Text Structure
  • Friday: Argument Writing

How will I use this?

  • bellringers
  • early finisher work
  • homework
  • sub plans

What is this passage about?

Do you think that understanding how to read a social media thread is important? I thought that it might be interesting for students to read a thread and use inferences to recognize the bias associated with each comment, as well as to discern the facts from the opinions that are stated as facts. So The Loch Ness Monster Vs. Bigfoot is a thread from a fictional social media site in which people debate which creature is better.

What is included?

  • A paper saving pdf version of the story and all of the skill work (Monday is a full page, Tues.-Friday are two per page.)
  • Full-page interactive digital version
  • Answers in both the pdf and digital format for quick review

How does it work?

The schedule below can be used if you are using this daily.

  • Monday begins with a short, high-interest reading passage.
  • Tuesday-Thursday will require students to work on reading skills and strategies related to the passage.
  • On Friday, students will write a short summary based on the passage.

Alternatively, you can easily assign one reading comprehension passage as a mini-unit. Just give students all of the reading and writing activities together at the same time. It will take 35-45 minutes that way.

How long will each activity take?

If it is completed daily, each activity will take about 5-10 minutes. If you would like to review the answers as a class, you’ll need a few more minutes for that.

If you assign each mini-unit at once, all five activities will take about 35-45 minutes.
