Two-Sentence Horror Stories – Micro Fiction Creative Writing

Kids love reading and writing two-sentence horror stories! But it’s not all about fun. Micro-fiction requires writing that is concise. Students actually WANT to revise until their story is perfect. (How often does THAT happen?)

This lesson encourages creativity and helps students form a new understanding of what makes a story complete. They will also form a newfound appreciation for the importance of word choice and point of view.

This two-day lesson begins with a 15 slide PowerPoint that includes original two-sentence horror stories. Students will “deconstruct” the components of each story, to form an understanding of the features that they have in common. They will examine how the author’s word choices and the narrative point of view impact the story.

Kids will be chomping at the bit when it’s time to begin crafting their own stories! It’s fascinating to observe them playing with language to write these concise stories.

This lesson can be used to introduce a narrative writing unit, or to introduce a horror or science fiction unit. It is perfect to leave with a substitute, but you may not want to miss out on the fun! Two-sentence horror stories are also perfect to cover at Halloween.
